Sunday morning finds the Ebon Storm, sans Ana and Bethany, back in the hotel gathering room, seemingly guarding a pink and white checked blanket and paper grocery bag. The service elevator pings open and Ana and Bethany emerge - the former carrying a silver tray complete with domed dish cover, a bud vase with a single pink rose, an empty coffee cup, and champagne flute; the latter carries a bottle of champagne, another of organic fresh squeezed orange juice and a steaming hot carafe of coffee. She smiles and hands it off to Jonas.
"Jamaica Blue Mountain. We decided against the Civet Cat one."
Jim gathers up the blanket, Gabe (in lupus) grabs the bag in his mouth, Jonas swipes his card, and, after what seems uncannily like a few bars of a muzak version of Danzig's "Mother", the pack emerge on the roof.
There's still an unpleasant haze over Tallahassee, but a sweet, cool breeze is sweeping the area over the hotel clean and the sunrise looks especially dramatic through all the smoke. The pack move to their picnic spot and set up - with a bowl for Gabe's beverage of choice this time. Ana whips the cover off the dish (stuffed french toast with strawberries) with a flourish and Jonas begins the offering to City Mother.
As before, Jonas completes the offering by bringing his mallet out and smashing down on the rose. The pack joins in, reducing the breakfast to near-atomic particles, until the destruction is satisfactorily complete. A swift but thorough clean-up follows, with all the debris neatly tied off inside the gingham blanket.
Moments later, City Mother greets them in the Umbra, wearing what looks like one of the hotel's snuggly cotton terry bathrobes and a big smile on her face. Her hair is wet and she smells faintly of flowers. The table before her is set with french toast, mimosas, and coffee for all.
