Fetch's head nodded off to the side as sleep threaten to take her. The sound of gunfire, which was keeping her awake, was silenced. She jerked suddenly and shook her head a bit. Glancing out the window of the second floor, she noticed that the sky was starting to turn red. It was almost morning. If it wasn't for all the debris, it was as silent as your usual Sunday morning.
Fetch attempted to stretch, but her injuries reminded her that was a bad idea. So she sat there for a bit, staring out of the window. Suddenly the smell of coffee assaulted her senses.
"Hey, wake up," she heard her brother say. "No sleeping on the job." When she opened her eyes, the sky was a much deeper red. How long was she asleep? Fetch reached for the cup. "Watch out, it's hot," Aaron warned her.
After draining half the cup, she looked up at her brother. Aaron looked bushed. White dust was caked all over his body. He had a tear in his T-shirt at his shoulder. A white bandage could be seen from the tear. On top of it all, he smelt bad too.
“You smell like a Bone Gnawer,” Fetch joked as she finished her coffee. “Oh my god! What is this shit?” She was awake enough to taste the coffee, if one could call it that.
“One of the Bone Gnawer kin managed to scrounge it up. We are still deciding whether to bless her or burn her for it. I think it is about three years old or something.” He was staring out the window, watching the sun rise. “It’s starting to quiet down. We have had anything show up for about an hour now.” Aaron looked at Fetch and glanced away quickly. “You should probably see the doc or something before she falls asleep herself.”
“I’m fine…”
“Riley, you look like you have been though hell and back.”
“I have been though hell and back. Cut me a little slack, will you?”
“Only when you cut yourself a little slack. From what I heard you were almost dead when they brought you back. They managed to patch you up a bit, but you still got some nasty burns and a nasty cut on your face. Go see the doctor and get some sleep.”
“I can’t leave this window undefended. It my duty to…”
“And it’s my duty to take care of you. Get your ass up stairs and go see Bethany.” He picked up a shotgun that Fetch didn’t notice before (Just how tired was she?). “I can watch the window for a bit.” Fetch gave Aaron an odd look. “What? Dad taught me how to shoot too. I might not be as good a shot as you are but I think I can hit a 25 foot tall thunderwyrm with a shotgun. It’s kind of hard to miss something that big.”
“Ok Ok. Fine you win. I’ll be back down here after I get check out.”
“Yeah Yeah whatever.” He waved Fetch off. Fetch sighed and started to hobble out of the room when suddenly Aaron cried out. Fetch turned around with her hand on her gun.
“Oh, noes! It’s the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man! We are doom!”
“What?” Fetch growled at Aaron. “You ARE an asshole.”
Aaron laughed weakly. “And it took you how many years to figured this out? “ Fetch snorted and limped out the door.
