Fetch wait in her car at the truck stop just outside of town. Listening to the radio she waited for her prey to show up. After about an hour, a dingy blue truck drove up to the truck stop. A very fat man got out of the truck and waddled his way to the diner at the stop.
Casually getting out of the car, Fetch walked over to the diner. Along the way, she glanced into the truck. Inside were three overcrowded cages of young mice. Fetch smiled. This was the right guy.
Fetch sat down at one of the tables in the dinner and ordered some coffee. She watched the fat man order his food. After the waitress left, he got up and walked to the restroom. The waitress came back with a glass of iced tea and set it down on the man’s table and walked off. Now was her chance.
Fetch reached for her cup of coffee and “accidentally” tipped it over. She cried out as the liquid hit her shirt. The waitress hurried over to clean up the mess. Fetch apologized profusely and headed towards the bathroom. As she walked past the fat man’s table, Fetch stealthily added a few drops of liquid to his tea. She went to the bathroom and cleaned herself up.
Settling down at back at her table, she ordered some pie and waited for the fat man to finish his food and drink. Just as he asked for his check, Fetch paid her bill and left the diner. She waited out in the car for the fat man to start on the road.
Fetch followed the fat man down I-10. It wasn’t long before, she noticed that he was speeding up. The blue truck hit about 90 as it exited the interstate. The fat man parked at the nearest gas station and ran out to the bathrooms. He even left the truck running.
Fetch parked behind the gas station and looked around. There was only one person working inside and the “cameras” outside was fake. Fetch used her gift of Jam Tech on the lights in the store. The employee took out a flashlight and walked to the back of the store.
The back of the truck was unlocked, so Fetch quickly grabbed the first mouse cage and opened the door. The adult mice raced out of the cage and into the parking lot. The hoppers in the second cage were less sure of themselves. Fetch had to shake the cage a few times to get them all out. Looking up at the store, she saw the lights flicker back on. She didn’t have much time.
When Fetch saw the mice in the third cage, her heart sank. Without their mothers, the baby pinkies would be dead in a few days no matter what she did. Glancing back at the bathroom door, Fetch threw an envelope filled with cash into the hopper cage and closed the door.
Fetch quickly walked back to her car. The employee of the gas station finally returned to the counter and checked the register to make sure everything was there. After about fifteen minutes the blue truck drove off at a more reasonable speed.
Fetch got out of her car again with a bag of seeds, hay, and dried fruit. She emptied the bag out into the grass just outside of the gas station. With that done, she got back into her car and drove off. She stopped at a different rest stop and got some apple chips out of the snack machine.
Just as she was opening up the bag, she felt something wiggle in her pocket. Mouse poked his head out and sniffed the air. Fetch smiled and shared her apple chips with the little guy. Mouse made quick work of his share of the bag and cleaned himself after he was done. He crawled back into Fetch’s pocket and disappeared back into the umbra.
Fetch smiled as she started her car to drive back to town.
